School Custodian Culligan Receives ‘Golden Apple’ Award

Randolph Academy has given Michael Culligan from its Hamburg Campus its coveted 2024 “Golden Apple” award. The honor recognizes an individual’s outstanding professional contribution and achievement. Interim Superintendent Larry Ljungberg presented the award to Mr. Culligan.

“Mike Culligan is the glue to our building – sometimes metaphorically, sometimes literally,” Ljungberg said during the presentation. “He keeps our school running – again, quite literally.”

Culligan joined Randolph Academy in 2015 and has become known as a quiet leader but strong supporter of the campus’ students and staff. He routinely goes above and beyond, especially during the winter months clearing parking lots and walkways, as well as his recent role in cleaning and repairing the playground following an act of vandalism. He also supports the district’s food truck, driving it to special events and ensuring it operates smoothly for students to show off the culinary skills they have learned as they delight their customers.

“He does this because he loves to see our students in the places where they shine the most,” Ljungberg affirmed.

Ljungberg also noted that Culligan is beloved, even among some of the school’s more challenging students, due to a unique ability to connect with them when they’re in crisis.

“Mike is able to redirect their frustrations and is always willing to support a student who is in need of a break,” Ljungberg added.
